Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible. - Ephesians 6:24As I read this verse today I was struck. Who on earth loves anything or anyone, much less Jesus, with love incorruptible?
All of my love is corruptible.
That's part of what it means to be human. To be able to say aloud with integrity, "My love is corruptible." I can say it with integrity because by the end of each day I have no integrity.
My love for my wife. My love for my family. My love for my friends. My love for God's church. All of it, corruptible.
It doesn't take long to twist love into something that isn't really love at all.
I love my wife as an indirect way to love myself.
I love my family to make life less complicated at holidays.
I love my friends to create a full life for myself.
I love God's church to keep up appearances.
Back to the verse. If our love were truly incorruptible we wouldn't need all that much grace, would we?
What if he's talking about a love comes out from inside us, but that doesn't originate in us? What if love incorruptible only comes from walking in step with and incorruptible God?
