How To Overcome Adversity

Proverbs 24:16 says, "for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity."

At first this looks great.  Righteous people persevere!  Righteous people are rescued by God!  Righteous people rise again!  And then you realize...

Why does the righteous person keep falling?  Why doesn't God keep the righteous person safe and make the wicked stumble?

There aren't any simplistic answers here, but there is a hint.  If you think that your righteousness earns you a pass to a comfortable, prosperous life then you will be sorely disappointed over and over again.  But if you seek the Lord regardless of the circumstances of your life then somehow your life gains a stability, a ballast  that is lacking from the life of a wicked man.

Only Jesus was the truly righteous one who stumbled and wasn't rescued.  He fell utterly so that God would lift us up in his place, and when you see that, you can face any adversity with the rock-solid conviction that God is still for you.
